How to Prepare Your Commingled Recycling for Collection

Sorting your recycling is easy! The new sorting system allows drivers to pick up materials more efficiently, helps keep costs down, and reduces the amount of useful materials going to the landfill as garbage.

Place the materials listed below together in your recycling roll cart

  • NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES & SCRAP PAPER: Includes newspaper, magazines, junk mail, phone books, catalogs, paper food boxes (cereal, pasta, etc.) with liners removed, and shredded paper (stuffed in a paper - not a plastic - bag).

Please do not include: Tissues, paper towels, paper with food residue, or frozen food boxes

  • CARDBOARD: Flatten & place cardboard no larger than 3' x 3' into the cart.

Please do not include: Waxed/coated cardboard or cardboard with food residue.

  • MILK CARTONS, JUICE CARTONS & DRINK BOXES: Rinse, air dry, and toss into the cart. Do not include the plastic straw that comes with drink boxes.

Please do not include: Paper with food residue or frozen food boxes.

  • PLASTIC: Rigid plastic containers and bottles with #1 through #7; clean plastic bottles, jugs, or jars (shampoo, soft drinks, detergent, etc.); prescription/pill bottles; plastic tubs and lids (butter, yogurt, cottage cheese).

Please do not include: Plastic bags (produce, bread, freezer, shopping, newspaper, dry-cleaning), plastic film, bubble wrap, frozen food containers, take-out containers, packing materials (block foam and packing peanuts), cups, plates, utensils, plastic caps, six-pack rings, plastic packaging material (rigid or soft), hazardous or toxic material containers (motor oil, antifreeze, pesticide, etc.), plastic toys, or garden hoses.

  • METAL CANS: Empty aluminum, steel, and tin cans; metal caps and lids; clean aluminum foil and foil baking trays. Remove the paper label (recycle the paper label), rinse clean, and toss into the cart.

Please do not include: Metal or cans with food residue or metal with other attached materials (plastics, etc.).

  • AEROSOL CANS: Empty the can through normal use, remove and discard the plastic cap, and toss the can into the cart. For safety do not flatten or puncture the can or remove the nozzle.

  • SCRAP METAL: Place all metal pieces shorter than 36" and less than 40 lbs into the cart.

Please do not include metal with other attached materials (plastics, etc.).
Note: Glass and motor oil cannot be placed in your roll cart. See instructions below for glass and motor oil collection.
