Most of the Combined bottles, cans, paper and cardboard Waste Management collects from residences and businesses, as well as debris from construction and demolition projects are sorted at Waste Management's Cascade Recycling Center in Woodinville, WA, the largest recycling facility of its kind on the West Coast.
In operation since September, 2003, the center employs the most advanced sorting technologies from the US and Europe, and ships the sorted commodities to both domestic and international markets for use in new products.
Because Waste Management customers generate so many recyclables, and to reduce transportation distances, some of the materials collected in South King County are sorted at Tacoma's SP Recycling facility, which opened in 2007.
Waste Management Recycle America markets sorted commodities to both domestic and international markets for use in new products. |
No Shredded Paper in Recycling
Shredded paper has limited value for making new paper, and is difficult to sort from other recyclables. More
|
No Plastic Bags in Recycling
Recyclables in plastic bags have to be emptied out for sorting. Please put recyclables loose in recycling containers so that they can be easily identified and sorted.
Loose plastic bags get dirty, cause machinery jams, and contaminate other recyclables.
Reuse plastic bags whenever possible. Even better, use durable cloth bags!
Recycle clean plastic bags at grocery stores, where they are collected in a clean environment.

|
No Needles in Recycling
Used needles and syringes are dangerous because they can:
- Injure residents, collectors and sorters
- Spread diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, tetanus & syphilis

Think Recycling Solutions!

Think Green!
Think Cascade Recycling Center!
Northwest residents like to "Think Green." However, they also need convenient systems to help them "walk their talk." In planning for the Cascade Recycling Center (CRC), Waste Management asked customers what we could do to help increase the amount of material they recycle. The answer was overwhelming: make recycling simpler and easier. Residential and commercial customers, as well as construction contractors, asked for streamlined collection service in which they didn't need to sort materials.
With our customers' needs in mind, the Cascade Recycling Center opened in September, 2003.
Today, our staff of top-notch employees at this impressive 82,000-sq. ft.facility handles recyclables collected from over 250,000 households in Western Washington. CRC processes 12,000 tons of commingled recyclables and 4,000 tons of construction and demolition materials every month. Details
The Center is not equipped to accept recyclables from the public, but construction and demolition contractors bring in tons of materials for recycling every day.
A single technology that sets us apart.
How can Cascade Recycling Center efficiently handle and process so much material? Because our state-of-the-art "single stream" sorting technology does all the work. This approach allows for residents and businesses to store all of their recyclables easily in one container. Paper, plastic, glass and metals all get collected together, and our specially designed equipment automatically does the sorting. Details
Our customers have embraced our All-in-one collection with open arms. Without having to sort and separate their recyclables, customers are finding it easier to recycle, and they are diverting more recyclables from the waste stream. The result is that residential and commercial customers are reducing their garbage service costs while municipal customers are making more progress toward achieving their landfill diversion goals.
At the end of the day, the increase in volume from higher residential participation more than offsets the costs of implementing a single stream program. And best of all, the reduced environmental impact will pay dividends for future generations.
Convenient Location on the East Side of Lake Washington.
Cascade Recycling Center's Woodinville location just off WA-522 (contractor directions) makes it convenient for construction and demolition customers working on the growing Eastside to avoid lengthy trips in heavy traffic, as well as reducing overall traffic and fuel emissions.
