Think Green this Holiday Season!

Tuesday, 04 December 2007

Did you know that American’s garbage increases by about 25 percent during the holiday season? Leftover turkey, piles of wrapping paper and mountains of packaging dramatically add to disposal volumes during November and December. However, there are simple ways to be more sensitive to the environment this holiday season! Waste Management encourages customers to “Think Green” by remembering to:

Reduce:

Instead of using disposable plastic shopping bags, substitute them with durable totes. Turn off holiday lights during the late night and daytime hours in order to reduce energy use.

Reuse:

Save and reuse holiday wrapping paper, ribbons and gift bags. Use reusable gift bags or wrap gifts in color comics from the Sunday paper!

Instead of buying a pre-cut tree, use an artificial tree or buy a potted tree and plant it after the holidays.

Recycle:

Wrapping paper, holiday cards, and cardboard boxes can all be recycled!

Food scraps like fruit, vegetables, old bread and left-overs, as well as food-soiled paper like pizza boxes and napkins can go in curbside yard carts in many areas. Instead of going to the landfill with garbage, food scraps that go in a curbside yard and food cart will be made into soil-enriching compost, which is available in garden stores. Waste Management currently provides food scrap collection for curbside yard waste subscribers in the following cities: Auburn, Bothell, Brier, Burien, Carnation, Everett, Federal Way, Issaquah, Kirkland, Lynwood, Maple Valley, Redmond, Seattle and Woodinville, as well as unincorporated King and Snohomish counties.
