Hillsboro Landfill Story
The Hillsboro Landfill is a 400-acre site located in Hillsboro, Oregon. The landfill is permitted to accept Commercial/ Demolition debris and permitted, non-hazardous Special Waste. The landfill was first opened in the mid 1960s and is estimated to close in 2040. Designed and operated under highly regulated and prescribed procedures, our landfill is engineered to protect surface and groundwater through state of the art environmental controls. We carefully maintain our site to ensure we meet or exceed all federal, state and local regulations.
Of the 400 acres the landfill possesses, 179 acres are designated and developed into a wetlands area. The wetlands area provides habitat for over one hundred bird species and mammals consisting of deer, beaver, rabbits, and many others. The wetlands provide storm water control for nearby neighborhoods and have increased flood control capacity of the Tualatin River. The Hillsboro Landfill partners with the Jackson Bottom Wetlands to support local educational programs through tours, species counts, and financial support. Together, Waste Management's landfills provide over 17,000 acres of protected land for wildlife habitats and 15, including the Hillsboro Landfill are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council.
Tualatin Valley Waste Recovery (TVWR) is a Waste Management owned recycling company located on the landfill property. TVWR recycles more than 50,000 cubic yards of wood and yard debris per year, which is ground into “Hog Fuel” which is used at local paper mills for production of power. Over 1,000 yards of concrete and 6,000 tons of glass last year were beneficially used during cell construction and site maintenance. By utilizing these recycled materials, the landfill saves the mining of thousands of yards of rock and gravel each year.
