Two Ways to Win

This competition is about reducing waste AND strengthening communities. There are two ways to win big:

Reduce waste.

The region that reduces their collective garbage the most will win $5,000 to give to the community non-profit(s) of their choice.

To determine the winner, WM will compare the pounds of garbage per household from this year to last. The community that reduces their garbage the most wins! To get started, check out our waste reduction tips. Each month, we will update our website with how each of the 3 regions are doing in this "waste-loss" challenge. The region with the lowest lbs/household is in the lead!

Educate.

Simply by educating and participating in sustainability in your region, each competition area can win up to $15,000 for the community non-profit(s) of their choice.

We encourage creativity and community involvement! Neighborhood organizations may choose from our outreach challenges or submit their own.

Each challenge is worth one point, and must be documented with a photo sent through one of the partner organizations to recyclenw@wm.com by the first of the following month. WM will post the photos on our website.

The $15,000 Outreach Prize may be earned in two ways.

  1. Complete the MOST challenges of any region in a month:

Each month, we will reward the region that completes the most challenges with $1,500* to give to a non-profit in their region.

*If another region completes nearly as many (75% or more of total number) challenges as the leader, they will receive $500 for a non-profit of their choice, leaving the leader with $1,000.

*If both trailing regions are within 75% of the activities of the leader, they will each receive $350, leaving the leader with $800 for that month.

  2. Complete one challenge every month for all 6 months of the competition.

At the end of the competition, we will split $6,000 evenly among all regions that completed an activity each month of the competition.

After the competition concludes in October 2016, Waste Management will work with partner organizations in the winning regions to distribute all of the reward money to non-profits in their communities.
