Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?

Anything labeled as toxic, flammable, corrosive, reactive, infectious, or radioactive can threaten personal health and safety and is therefore considered hazardous household waste.

Common hazardous wastes found in the home include: paints in liquid form, paint thinner and stripper, weed killer, pesticides and herbicides, brake fluid, gasoline and diesel fuel, antifreeze and solvents.

These items may not be put in your garbage or recycling cart, container or drop box. These items are not accepted at the Newberg Transfer Site or at any of our recycling depots.

What can I do with my leftover paint?

Liquid paint is not accepted in garbage or recycling carts, containers, or drop boxes.

Oil based paints, stains, paint thinners, and paint strippers are household hazardous waste and must be taken to a HHW facility or collection event.

Small quantities of latex paint may be dried in the can by simply leaving the lid off or by adding a drying agent such as kitty litter or shredded newspaper. Once the latex paint is completely dry, it may be placed in a NGS garbage container.

Large quantities of liquid latex paint must be taken to a HHW facility or collection event.
